Lessons with Dad: Field Dressing Grouse

I may have a blog dedicated to what I love, but that doesn’t mean I’m an expert! We all are constantly learning.

After 10 years of hunting, I decided I wanted to start taking it more seriously. Instead of just harvesting one mule deer per year, I was eager to try other species. Aside from passion, I think an empty college freezer had a lot to do with my goal, too. I had my heart set on a bear hunt. And luckily, while spending two weekends unsuccessfully hunting bear, I still got to experience two firsts that I am very proud of!

The first weekend, I killed my first coyote! We’d hunted for coyote months before without any luck, so this was very exciting. Also, a 15 yard shot doesn’t happen every day with a ‘yote!

And the second weekend, I got my first bird–a grouse! Let me tell ya, I have the bird hunting bug now! With this being my first bird, of course, I had no idea how to field dress it; that’s where the new segment on Little Honey Hunts comes in.

My dad has taught me everything I know about hunting, from the rise and fall of a bullet to wind direction and animal sign. I’ve been hunting with him since I was seven years old–that’s 13 years! Every new hunting (or fishing… or game cooking) adventure, I rely on Dad to teach me. With field dressing my first grouse, it was the same!

His method is a quick, less than 5-minute, process. This week, I’m sharing my Dad’s lesson with you, too!  I hope you enjoy watching and can learn a thing or two like I did!
