Equality for the SportsWOMAN

I had many reasons for starting this blog. Obviously, I’m very passionate about everything on this blog; hunting, fishing and cooking what you harvest are all very special to me. I want to share that love with others. I want to teach others things that I have learned. But the biggest reason I started this blog was to promote women in the outdoors.

I consider myself to be a very independent woman, until I need a jar of pickles opened. I believe I can do anything I man can–and actually, I can do it better. Because this is still not consider an equality in outdoor sports, I’ve been offended several times by the industry.

My fire was lit last Christmas when I finally decided to upgrade the hunting gear I’d worn for the past ten years. In case you don’t know me in person, it’s important for you to know I’d never really grown in those ten years. But I finally decided to upgrade due to a few barbwire tears and a craving for clothing that could make me feel more confident and like a woman. I understand the field isn’t a fashion show and I understand that women wear men’s gear all the time, but I just wanted to not look exactly like my brother from the back–and ladies, I know you know what I mean.

At the sporting goods store, I found a company that answered every prayer and dream of mine, Girls With Guns (I’ll touch on my favorite hunting wear later). Then later that month, I went to the same sporting good store in a different town to find not a single piece of clothing for a woman.

Fast forward several months, I was preparing for my first bear hunt by listening to podcasts and watching YouTube videos. The number of times the men in these videos/podcasts would say things like “he” or “the guys” when giving advice or telling stories was appalling.

Right now, it’s flat out not fair. So that’s my mission; I want to inspire and empower women, young and old, to be welcomed to this industry and sport by teaching and sharing my journey. Here’s to female equality in the outdoors!
